Funding

Funding

A stay abroad can cost quite a bit. However, this also depends on a person’s individual requirements and plans. Therefore, it is important that you calculate in advance what costs will arise and whether you have enough money, for example, for travelling to explore the host country. A personal financial plan with a simple income and balance sheet is recommended.

Erasmus+ Mobility

For participating in the Erasmus Programme (Erasmus students exchange with partner universities of the Academy, Erasmus Traineeship and Erasmus Traineeship for Graduates), students have at their disposal an allotment of “mobility months” partly financed by the Erasmus+ grant. All the months spent abroad in the Erasmus+ status are deducted from this allotment per level of study (BA, MA, diploma study programme, doctoral studies). Mobility programmes are thus possible more than once for each student. Therefore, it is imperative that you consider all the possibilities and opportunities that the Erasmus Programme has to offer to students and recent graduates in order to integrate these chances into your studies.

Study exchanges, exchanges with Erasmus+ partner universities:

Bachelor programme: 3 months minimum, 12 months maximum funding
Master programme: 3 months minimum, 12 months maximum funding
Diploma study programme: 3 months minimum, 24 months maximum funding (diploma study programmes and subsequent MA studies are calculated at 24 months)
Doctoral studies: 3 months minimum, 12 months maximum funding

Students have the option of going abroad either as exchange students or as Erasmus+ Trainees (or both). An Erasmus+ Traineeship is possible between any two levels of study and after completion of a PhD (doctoral studies).

A Traineeship must last for at least two months and can, taking into account any months already used up for a different study exchange, be extended to a maximum of twelve months.

Depending on the living expenses in the respective target country, mobility programmes in the Erasmus+ Programme are funded with an amount of between EUR 380 and EUR 580 per month.

Recipients of an Austrian study grant can additionally apply for a foreign grant.

Mobility in third countries

Partial funding can be provided via a Foreign Exchange Scholarship for Students of Universities of the Arts (grants.at). For this to apply, the university must be located in a third country (so outside the European Union, now including the United Kingdom). Students must be enrolled in the 6th semester of their diploma study programme or in a Master programme. The scholarship amounts to EUR 600 per month.

On grants.at, Austria’s largest database for scholarships and research grants, you will find more information on scholarships, grants and subsidies in both German and English. This database is continually expanded and updated. Especially if you are planning to participate in a mobility programme in a third country, research there will pay off.

Recipients of an Austrian study grant can additionally apply for a foreign grant at the Austrian Study Grant Authority.

Swiss-European Mobility Programme (SEMP)

Swiss universities provide a scholarship for exchange students from the Academy. You will find all the information pertaining to this scholarship on the websites of the respective Swiss partner universities. Recipients of an Austrian study grant can apply for a special grant for studying in a third country.

ASA Art School Alliance

The Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (https://www.hfbk-hamburg.de/en/internationales/art-school-alliance/) provides a furnished apartment and an atelier working space free of charge, while living expenses and travel costs must be paid by the student themselves. Recipients of an Austrian study grant can apply for a special grant for studying in a third country, as the ASA Programme is not an Erasmus+ exchange programme.
