The scholarship holders of the Academy Studio Program present themselves and their works, which have been created so far within the framework of the program year of the alumni sponsorship program. The artists work in four studio communities in the Creative Cluster, where numerous other visual and performing artists as well as cultural and creative professionals are located with their studios and workshops.

Artist Talk: Birgit Jürgenssen Price winner Aykan Safoğlu in conversation with curator Fanny Hauser

On the occasion of the exhibition Aykan Safoğlu Wenn eine Welle bricht ... the artist, who was awarded the Birigt-Jürgenssen Prize in 2021, will lead a conversation with curator Fanny Hauser. The focus is on the artist's work, which revolves around life, migration and family stories, and thus the past, which in Safoğlu's work is always portrayed through the mirror of personal experience and feeling. The artist skillfully relates intimate memory work to the media conditions of its storage, documentation, and reproduction in film, photography, and scanning. The material qualities of the media are made present and at the same time used as a metaphor for the contents depicted in his films. In this way, Safoğlu succeeds in setting political issues and image politics in parallel in his works, which are articulated not only cinematically but also as expansive installations
Aykan Safoğlu is a PhD-in-Practice student at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.

The internationally active curatorial trio Raqs Media Collective from New Delhi was invited to question the historical art collections of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from an external perspective and to accompany their thematic realignments through a dialogue with contemporary art. Incorporating the current discourse on decolonialism, the exhibition Hungry for Time opens up the possibility of reconsidering the collections of the Gemäldegalerie, the Kupferstichkabinett, and the Glyptothek.
The exhibition Thicket of Ideas - Thicket of Times in the Exhibit Gallery is conceived as a dialogue with the collection exhibition Hungry for Time, which is understood as a call for "epistemic disobedience" and thus for questioning Eurocentric, "Western" thinking. Since the Academy's historical art collections serve as a point of reference for the students, the critical gaze in the context of this dialogue exhibition is primarily directed at the construction of (art) history and the conditions of historiography.

In the context of the exhibition The Poiesis of Composting , which is still on view in the Exhibit Eschenbachgasse until February 12, 2022, the curators Guilherme Maggessi and Rafał Morusiewicz invite the Vienna-based Kollektiv Sprachwechsel for an open reading of selected texts. In the discussion panel, moderated by the curators, the aim is to expand the metaphorical notion of composting into the realm of text and more specifically into the discussion of what it means to produce texts in a language in which one hasn’t been socialized in. Can translation be understood as a form of mutation? How does reading in another language change the way one writes? How writing in another language modifies the ways in which one reads? How can the metaphor of composting be a lens for us to understand these processes in different ways? And finally, how does text function in an exhibition space?
