Based on the first workshop held in this format, Gangs of Performative Activism (2019), Pfalzer explores performative strategies in activism of the past and present as well as the question of a sense of community that may be evoked through jointly embodied experiences. Together with local artists and activists, performative strategies of activist groups like Pussy Riot and art collectives like Guerrilla Girls, structures of projects like Silent University as well as strategies of hooliganism and cheerleading are identified and comparatively discussed. The working group then agrees on a set of adoptable methods of performative activism, internalizing them to prepare for an intervention in public space. Their shared goal is to experience firsthand the strengths and perils of anonymity, community, and collective identity.
