Dr. Gisela Prochazka-Eisl (second supervisor) and Doz. Mag. Dr. Assoc. Prof. Axel Stockburger (external appraiser, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna).

Abstract

The dissertation examines the interrelationship between "gender" and the medium "television". A television analysis is used to discuss whether gender-coded stereotypes are present in the Turkish television series "Binbir Gece" ("One Thousand and One Nights") and "Kara Sevda" ("Endless Love"), or whether the representation of women is influenced regarding gender- specific representation policies. The paper positions itself at the intersection between Gender/Queer- and Cultural Studies. It aims to analyze gender-coded stereotypes and forms of representation in media productions.
In addition to the gender-political dynamics in the context of social and cultural processes in the construction of gender relations, gender issues and gender identities in Turkey, also the economic, cultural, political and power-critical aspects of the medium “television”, the presence of the international format trade and television market as well as the production and distribution of Turkish television productions are examined from a media-theoretical perspective.
The cohesion of the cultural and media theory components provides a basis for the conception, development and implementation of the methodology of television analysis from the Turkish television series "Binbir Gece" ("One Thousand and One Nights") and "Kara Sevda" ("Endless Love"), which questions how stereotypical gender relations are effective on Turkish television and how the medium “television” produces gender perceptions and gender roles.
