Roland-Rainer-Chair, Professorship for architectural design and research
The Institute for Art and Architecture (IKA) is advertising this professorship according to §99 of the Universities Act 2002 (Universitätsgesetz 2002). The appointment is for a period of 1 year starting 1.September 2012.
The Roland-Rainer-Chair, implemented in 2009 and financed by the City of Vienna, aims at embedding and further developing Roland Rainer's notion of architecture in the study programs of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, reflecting his way of teaching as well as the consequences of his work and his awareness of responsibility in architecture. It should consider the social, political and ecological perspectives beyond the question of pure design. The Roland-Rainer-Chair should maintain a productive dialogue with the Vienna Departments of City Planning and the professional and research communities concerned with Urbanism.
The chair will be dedicated to the following key aspects of education and research:
- The analysis and definition of needs and principles conditions of habitat - including the research on anonymous architecture and referring to the complexity of Roland Rainer's notion of architecture.
- The development of urban visions, which address issues of contemporary society and contribute to position architecture and urban planning within a wider political, economic and ecological framework.
- Roland Rainer's built and written oeuvre in its historical context, its meaning and implication and consequences for the contemporary discourse and its future development should be reflected.
The outcome of the research process has to be presented to a larger public e.g. through the format of publication/exhibition or other.
Preferred qualifications:
Applicants should be knowledgeable about Roland Rainer's body of thought and work. Their teaching experience and research should relate to at least two of the three platforms:
GEOGRAPHY | LANDSCAPES | CITIES, ECOLOGY | SUSTAINABILITY | CONSERVATION as well as HISTORY | THEORY | CRITICISM. At least one research project for these platforms is to be proposed as part of the application.
Requirements for the application:
- The applicant must be a qualified architect or urban planner with an Austrian or equivalent non-Austrian degree;
- proof of excellent artistic, technological and organisational achievements in architecture
- proof of teaching qualifications and university teaching experience;
- proof of both excellent practical or theoretical achievements in architecture;
- proof of highly qualified, extramural practice in the relevant field;
- an excellent command of English and German;
The position covers teaching obligations of at least 12 units a week.
The gross monthly salary according to the collective bargaining agreement for university employees in group A1 is currently EUR 4,571.20. Salary may be increased contingent upon candidates' qualifications.
