Saskia Te Nicklin in conversation with Nora Sternfeld (art educator, curator, co-founder of Büro trafo.K a.o.) and Sören Grammel

The exhibition presents new works by Saskia Te Nicklin. Both in her paintings and her sculptural projects, the artist appropriates mostly inconspicuous objects everybody is familiar with from his/her everyday life and motifs in which she is interested in new materials and formats. The return key of a keyboard, for example, which we gently touch a hundred times a day, suddenly presents itself as a solid sculpture of black stone. Or we come upon the user interface of an electronic pocket calculator which reminds us of our early schooldays, yet leans against a wall as a painted picture, copied accurately in every detail, but enlarged umpteen times. We thus find ourselves at eye level with the old-fashioned LCD display which we have looked down on in our hand for years. The thought bubble from a comic or the artist’s calling card (a product à la Jones from a machine at a railway station) confront us as objects made of light-colored stone – definitely exceeding the capacity of a wallet or a comic page. The copies’ play with the visual and material character of the world of objects called up as references aims at an irritation of the reality the originals embody.
