Molding and Casting Techniques
The workshop is dedicated to three main areas: Molding and casting, ceramics and digital model creation using 3D printing.
Molding and casting technique: Depending on the complexity of the master model or the choice of material for the casting, we create molds from plaster, silicone or laminate molds from acrylic resin and jute. For projects involving body impressions, we mainly use alginate, while orthopedic mold foam is used for quick terrain impressions. For the casts, we use various materials such as plaster, acrylic resin or wax, although more experimental materials from the food sector or other organic media can also be used. The introductory courses "Technical Basics of Sculpture - Molding and Casting Techniques 1+2" are recommended as a foundation for the project work.
Ceramics: Another focus is on working with ceramics. Two kilns are located in our workshop. In addition to the casting technique, we also teach various ceramic shaping techniques such as build-up and modeling techniques. We mainly work with high-firing masses such as stoneware or porcelain and regularly carry out bisque firings (950° - 980°) and glaze firings (1200° - 1230°). The introductory course "Ceramics 1" serves as a basis for the project work.
Digital mold creation: Based on learning different 3D drawing and planning programs, we impart knowledge for the material realization of digitally created models. 3D printers and a 3D scanning system are available in our workshop. The course "Technical basics of sculpture - computer-assisted design work" forms the fundament for your own project work.
How to use: The workshop can be used freely after completing a course. Students with previous knowledge from other programs can also work in the workshop without attending the courses. A brief introduction to the workshop regulations is all that is required beforehand. Interested parties can register for this by emailing k.weissenberger@akbild.ac.at
