Helen Zeru
From October 2018 to January 2019 Helen Zeru is Artist in Residence at the Academy and will be affiliated with the Studio Textual Sculpture.
Helen Zeru is a multimedia visual artist whose work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Within her practice, Helen Zeru works with context-based performances and works with the idea of transmitting the real event and the acting event, different forms of the same work through different media. For example, transmitting a certain cultural event, history… in to performance then in to a video work then designing manual drawing, and through this process see what are the forms that are transmittable and non-transmittable.
Recent works and projects have been researching on formal and informal art institutions in relation to informal economy and how an informal economy can be a supportive structure to an informal art institution, within countries like Ethiopia where the majority of the economy is informal.
She received a Bachelor of Fine Art from the Alle school of Arts and Design in 2008 and a Master of Arts (Art Praxis) from the Dutch Art Institute in 2017. She exhibited in numerous exhibitions including New York, Berlin, Kampala, Uganda, Vienna, Amsterdam, Georgia, Egypt and the U.S. Exhibition venues include Dakart off 2018, Neue National gallery Berlin, 32° East Kampala Uganda, the Studios Das WeisseHaus Vienna, EnBw Show room Berlin, 1stTibilis Triennial Georgia, Independent curators International (ICI) New York, Belgrade, GIZ Addis Ababa, Unversitant Der Kunste Berlin, Modern Art Museum Addis Ababa, Asni Gallery, National Gallery Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
