The wonderful world of sewing boxes: between individuality and contemporary taste

Sewing boxes, so tell the sellers in antique stores, are often thrown away during apartment liquidations. No one can imagine that the old tools, sewing materials and, not least, containers made of wood, raffia, plastic or cardboard, which have been collected over decades and are often valuable, have any value for anyone else. The lecture throws a new light on these objects of repair used in private.

Heike Derwanz is a cultural and art scholar specializing in material culture, visual culture, and the anthropology of the economic. She has been teaching and researching sustainability at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna since October 2021.
