The Institute for Education in the Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna kindly invites you to the defense of Fabio Alexander Otti’ dissertation project Gender_Queer_Drag. Drag Beyond the Binary in Vienna.

The Examination Panel is made up of: Carolin Bohlmann (chair), Elke Krasny (supervisor), and Nicole Haitzinger (external appraiser, University of Salzburg).

Abstract

The dissertation project 'Gender_Queer_Drag - Drag Beyond the Binary in Vienna’ analyses the historical and discourse-theoretical developments in relation to drag and draws comparisons with developments in the geographical field of Vienna. After a genealogical examination of the developments of the term and the link to current research, the aim is to consider which aesthetics drag can adopt beyond the binary and which areas of impact are covered. Using Lesley Bartlett and Frances Vavrus’ (2016) Comparative Case Study approach, five different contemporary case studies in Vienna that deal with drag beyond the binary will be analysed in more detail and placed in the context of current research in order to stimulate further reflection on how drag can challenge the current gender binary.
