In 2025, 80 years after the end of the Second World War and the liberation from National Socialism, the memory of victims and places of violent crimes is receiving increased attention in terms of social and educational policy. Questions about the relevance of remembrance and its contemporary forms and content are currently renegotiated, particularly due to the passing of the generation of contemporary witnesses. Present global crises, such as the wars in Ukraine or the Middle East, pose additional challenges with their influence on political and cultural discourses on remembrance. Schools as educational institutions play a central role in these collective processes.
The conference ‘Eighty Years Later: NS remembrance work in artistic practice and mediation today’ focuses on artistic forms of remembrance work and on related mediation experiences and practices. It is aimed at educational stakeholders, in particular teachers and student teachers, as well as representatives of research institutions, universities, memorial sites and museums, artists and cultural mediators.
