With the current Art | Research newsletter we would like to inform you about numerous calls for proposals and competitions. The list of congratulations is particularly long this time. Congratulations to our colleagues!

If you want to spend part of this summer writing a research proposal, you have several opportunities to do so: Marietta Blau (1.9.), MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship (11.9.), ÖAW DOC (16.9.), FWF PEEK, Esprit or Principal Investigator Projects (ongoing). If you are interested in submitting to these or other programmes, please feel free to contact us via kfs@akbild.ac.at.

We take this opportunity to draw your attention to the MAK Schindler Scholarship Program  at the Mackey Apartments, Los Angeles. The program is open to freelance artists, architecture students (2nd study phase) and architecture graduates immediately after graduation.

Congratulations to Stefanie Wuschitz (IKL) and Patrícia J. Reis for the nomination award for S+T+ARTS 2024. The project Clay PCB: Eco-Feminist Decolonial Hardware is one of the results of the PEEK project Feminist Hacking: Building Circuits as an Artistic Practice (1.3.2020 - 31.12.2023).

Paula Maya Strunden | The Academy's Award for Scientific Works

We warmly congratulate Paula Maya Strunden on winning the Academy's Award for Scientific Works 2023/24. Her thesis "bodies, objects, spaces – Exploring Multisensory Spatial Perception through Extended Reality Models", written at the IKA, investigates within a design-based research framework the impact of Extended Reality technologies on multisensory spatial perceptions.

Sophia Rohwetter | The Academy's Honorary Award for Scientific Works

The Honorary Prize of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna goes to Sophia Rohwetter (Master in Critical Studies) for her master thesis "Tears of A Clown. The tragic and the comic in the work of Mike Kelley" (IKW). The master’s thesis examines the forms of the tragic and the comic in the work of American artist Mike Kelley (1954–2012) from a psychoanalytic perspective, with particular consideration of the series Half a Man (1987–1991). Congratulations!

Emma Hummerhielm Carlén | UNIQA Art Prize 2024

In cooperation with UNIQA, the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna is awarding the UNIQA Art Prize, which is endowed with €15,000, for the first time. This makes it one of the most highly endowed prizes for young artists in Austria. It goes to Emma Hummerhielm Carlén, a sculptor who is able to explore spaces in an extremely differentiated way and who convinced the jury members with her formally precise, minimal and powerful works. The prize winner's exhibition will open in February 2025 in the foyer of the UNIQA Tower in Vienna.

We would like to congratulate Rebecca Merlic (IKA) and Vik Bayer (Art and Space | Installation, graduation 2024) on winning the Theodor Körner Prize for the project Domum Wien and the essay film Losing Futures.

TACK | Infra-thin Magick

An installation developed by Paula Strunden as part of the ITN project TACK (1.3.2020 - 28.2023) is currently on display at the Museum der Moderne in Salzburg. The exhibition Generator #2: Paula Strunden. Infra-thin Magick can be seen until 15 September 2024; it is best to reserve a timeslot in advance for the immersive sessions.

Two Ore Mountains | Listening Station on Practices of Hope amidst Extractive Violence

Karin Reisinger's research project Two Ore Mountains (1.3.2020 - 29.2.2024) is exhibited at the 11th edition of the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) called Nature of Hope (29.6. - 13.10.2024) with an installation which includes two new videos with practitioners from the disappearing mining town of Malmberget and a public conversation (14.7.). The videos are also available in the Academy's repository (video with Lis-Mari Gurák Hjortfors, video with Pernilla Fagerlönn).
